Erk FM Metal Monday 156 – Jamming Around The World

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 156. Instead of watching ice hockey brawls on YouTube (a personal favourite is 14 Minutes of Pissed Off Goalies - it does exactly what it says on the box!), Erk is bringing you metal from around the world, probably in languages other than English (the bands, that is, not Erk) courtesy of music supplier Jamendo. Some of the tracks are so not in English that Erk's English keyboard can not re-create the letters forming the titles of the songs.

The first song is called Escape From Dead Halt by Metal Mood. You might listen to the start of the song & think that Erk has gone stark raving mad. Look past the the piano in the introduction and you'll hear some German metal.

The next band are called ReconQuistA from Russia. Erk plays a few tracks from them but can't translate the song titles into English. Making a return to Erk FM: Metal Monday are Melqart who are from Spain. Erk wonders if the traditional "U follows a Q" rule also applies in Spanish. Probably not.

Next are ApocryphA from Argentina. Based...

Erk Pod 522 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 55 (Singapore Malaysia)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 522. On this episode, Erk leaves the city & country of Singapore & heads to Jonor Bahru, Malaysia. Erk's original plan was to walk over the causeway joining the two countries however new immigration buildings on the Malaysian side means that this is no longer possible. Not wanting to hire a car or other vehicle, Erk decides that there is still a way to do this - public transport!   Catching a couple of trains from near his Singapore hotel to the train station near the border checkpoint, he catches a bus to the Singapore exit point. Leaving the bus, he goes upstairs & gets his passport stamped to say he is leaving Singapore. Boarding another bus, he crosses the causeway by road & ends up on the Malaysian side. Leaving the bus again, he goes upstairs to the Malay entry point for another passport stamp. The process is repeated on the way back to Singapore.

Erk FM: Australia 486 – Rocktober Preview

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 486. This is a preview of next month's Rocktober. This preview episode dates from the last time that Erk did Rocktober in 2012. There is a lot of great Australian rock out there & I've only touched the surface! To allow more music, there's not a lot of talking from Erk on this episode - more music, less waffle!

Music supplied by Radio Submit, Musik & Film, Cyber PR, Deuce Management & Promotion, SGC Media & the artists directly.

Erk Pod 521 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 54 (Singapore)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 521. Erk's time in Singapore is rapidly running out & the long trip and the ever changing weather conditions is starting to take its toll. Has Erk finally found where all the people in Singapore are on day 54 of the trip?

Erk FM: International 485 – Rocktober Preview

by Erk

Welcome to episode 485 of Erk FM: International. This is a preview of Rocktober which is coming up from next week with all new tracks. This re-presented episode dates from the last time Erk did Rocktober, 2012.

Music supplied by AirPlay Direct & Ambicon Records.

Erk Pod 520 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 53 (Singapore)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 520. Erk is now starting to enjoy Singapore more than he did when he first arrived after an awesome week in Japan. Singapore was a convenient way to break up the trip between Japan and Australia & has not been a city of Erk's "must explore" list.

Erk FM Metal Monday 155 – Canadians Still Heading To Wacken

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 155. Erk again features Canadian metal bands who competed for the chance to go to Wacken. On this episode, we also find out who did actually win the race to go to Wacken on behalf of Canadians. Music supplied by Asher Media Relations.

Erk FM: Australia 484 – Reflecting Self Centredly

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 484. This is a re-presentation of Erk FM episode 174 originally released in June 2011. This episode is an interview with Symon (guitar) and Allan (drums) from western Sydney progressive metal band Centred Self. Music supplied directly by the band. During the interview, we find out how Centred Self got its name, how the band got together, recording and rehearsing, drumming, the live music scene in Sydney & a lot more. On the day of this interview, Symon & Allan were pre-producing drum tracks at Party Pig Studios in the early stages of producing the forthcoming Centred Self debut album. This album was planned for late 2010 but never saw the light of day, sadly. Among other things, Allan is now drumming successfully for metal band Dawn Heist while Symon ran away and joined the circus ... um, not really. It makes for an interesting headline, though!

A lot has happened after this interview occurred. Soon after the interview, Erk travelled across Europe and formulated the idea for Erk FM: International & Erk FM: Australia and how they would work while he was overseas. The idea for Erk FM: Metal Monday...

Erk FM: International 483 – Sitting On The Couch

by Erk

Continuing back at looking back at music across Channel Erk, Erk features an alternative online music festival called Couch X Couchwest.

While CXCW requires video to be filmed from anywhere that isn't a stage, there are some tracks on this episode that have been recorded in a studio environment. Some of the songs on this episode, however, are played directly from the artist's CXCW video submission.   You can see many videos that have been created for CXCW plus a lot more about the World's Best Online Music Festival at the official CXCW website.   Thank you to the CXCW team for involving me in the festival this year & helping me to promote this show while I am promoting the festival.   This episode starts with a couple of new submissions by artists that have appeared on Erk FM before. Then various artists who won CXCW awards are featured.

Erk Pod 519 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 52 (Singapore PM)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 519. Erk is midway through his stay in Singapore & is enjoying exploring the city. A good way of exploring a city initially is on foot & Erk has certainly been doing a lot of walking. There's certainly more to see & do than Erk initially thought!

Erk FM Metal Monday 154 – Oot & Aboot To Wacken

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 154. On this episode, Erk continues to feature Canadian metal bands competing for the chance to head to the Wacken festival. Many of the bands on this episode are from Edmonton, Calgary or Montreal.

Music supplied by Asher Media Relations.

    Song list:

Erk Pod 518 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 52 (Singapore AM)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 518. Erk is starting to get into some sort of routine. Get up, go for a walk around, have some lunch, walk around some more, maybe catch a couple of trains. With his hotel not being downtown, there is a train or bus ride that is required should Erk decide to head downtown.

Erk FM: Australia 482 – Remembering Bigsound

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 482. This encore episode sees the beginning of a range of content from the Bigsound 2013 conference/showcase in Brisbane a year ago. Bringing together a range of musicians & music industry people from Australia and beyond), it was an exciting conference for Erk FM. It was a great way to meet people that I have only spoken to online and/or heard online via this podcast. There were days of conference sessions that I did not attend as well as 2 nights of live music across 12 venues in Fortitude Valley.

As you might be able to imagine, I was in podcasting & music heaven. However, I was (obviously) unable to cover the entire event because there's only so much one person (me!) can do.

On this week's episode, there are interviews conducted over 2 days of various artists. Over 2 days, there were over 250 interviews conducted by various media & new media outlets. A very big thank you to Stephen, Andrew & Sarah from SGC Media for arranging these interviews & my media accreditation. Big thank you also to my media/band liaison people Laura & Maddi for making sure that the bands & I were...

Erk Pod 517 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 51 (Singapore)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 517. Erk has just arrived in Singapore. Out of all the places that Erk has gone on this trip, Singapore is the place that Erk has least looked forward to. For one reason, it is a step closer to the end of the trip. Second, Singapore has been a country & a city that Erk has had no special reason to visit or no overwhelming desire to visit before now. Thirdly, Erk has to fly via Singapore to/from Japan rather than direct because his airline of choice does not fly there (Australia - Japan) directly. Regardless, Erk has selected to spend a week in Singapore so let's see what happens!

Erk FM: International 481 – Blasting Back To Elephants

by Erk

Welcome to episode 481 of Erk FM: International. Erk continues his look back at previous music on Channel Erk. Today, he selects episode 58 of Judy's Blast FM. On that week, Judy presents elephant songs - if you listened to Blast From The Past, you'll know how much Judy love elephants. Most music is supplied on this episode by the Podsafe Music Network. One thing that Erk & Judy had never been afraid of while podcasting was having unusual themes.

  Song list:

Erk FM: Australia 480 – Blasting Back

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia 480. On this episode, Erk decides to go for a blast from the past - namely via his mum. Erk's mum Judy used to podcast with him on a talk show called Blast From The Past. She later decided to do a music show, Judy's Blast FM. So Erk decides to replay an episode of Judy's Blast FM featuring a series of artists primarily from Sydney.

    Song list:

Erk Pod 516 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 50 (Farewell Japan)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 516. With everything on Erk's short list of must-do things in Japan ticked & some snow adventures for good measure, Erk is preparing to leave Japan. Rest assured, Erk will be back again in the future after a couple of short visits. Next time, the visit will be longer. One thing that Erk has noticed is that he takes a couple of days to get used to Japan & by the time he starts to feel comfortable, it is time to go. Next time will be longer, promise.   Erk's next stop is Singapore - it is also Asian but very different to Japan (or so Erk hears!).

Erk FM Metal Monday 153 – Off To Wacken, Eh?

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 153. On this week's episode, Erk features a range of Canadian bands courtesy of Asher Media Relations who were competing - battling, if you will - for a spot at Wacken, one of the most well known outdoor metal festivals in the world.

    Song list:

Erk Pod 515 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 50 (Railway Museum)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 515. Erk is visiting The Railway Museum on the outskirts of Tokyo. There is something for all ages ranging from train simulators, train displays, , model trains, tours & a lot more. If you love trains & go to Japan, you must visit the museum. If you want to feel what it is like to be a train driver like Erk, try out the simulators (there is a charge for the steam train simulator but the subway & Shinkansen simulators are free). It is also a good place to buy train related merchandise.   Can't speak Japanese? No need to worry - you can get by without it. If you want to go more indepth, there are English guides & maps available.

Erk Pod 514 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 50 (Nippori)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 514. It is Erk's final day in Japan and he is trying to fit as much into the day as he can. The initial plan was to check out of the hotel, go to the Railway Museum, back to the hotel & pick up the bags & then go to the airport. Instead of that, Erk changed his mind (not for the first time) but it worked out a lot better.   Check out of the hotel, catch a couple of trains to Nippori. At Nippori station, there are luggage lockers for Erk to put his bags. From there, he can go to the Railway Museum, return to Nippori, collect his bags & then get the express train to the airport. Good plan, Erk!

Erk FM: International 479 – Blasting Back To September

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 479. Erk decides to have a look back at a September themed episode of Judy's Blast FM from September 2009. Judy (Erk's mum) used to podcast with Erk on a talk show called Blast From The Past before starting her own music show Judy's Blast FM. A theme of the show was her discovering (as Erk would say) that there is more to music than country and/or western.

  Song list:

Erk Pod 513 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 49 (Shinjuku & Shibuya)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 513. On this episode, Erk takes you to the neighbouring suburbs of Tokyo, Shinjuku & Shibuya. Over the last few days, Erk has been exploring Shinjuku on foot & by subway but today heads to nearby Shibuya. As soon as he gets there & explores, he remembers why he liked the area on his last visit in 2011.

Erk FM Metal Monday 152 – Whiplash Revisited (Melbourne)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 152. On last week's episode, Erk re-presented the opening night of the 2012 Whiplash Tour in Sydney. Between that episode (originally recorded as Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 58) and Melbourne, the final stop of the tour, a lot happened. There was a lot of awesome music and friendship but also some behind the scenes action which saw a change of promoter mid-tour. The Melbourne show was very emotional for the bands who had done a major part of the tour. This episode was originally recorded as Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 63.

  Interviews:

  • Create Destroy
  • Any Last Words
  • Mnemic
  • Lynchmada

Live tracks from the following bands (as recorded by Erk):

Erk FM: Australia 478 – Queensland Sampler

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 478. On this episode, Erk continues his musical journey around Australia courtesy of AirPlay Direct. Had Erk started this journey in a logical way & not started in the state he lives in, the journey may have started in Queensland. But no, Erk started in NSW, headed to Victoria, South Australia then Western Australia. This week, Erk heads to Queensland, the Sunshine state.

    Song list:

Erk Pod 512 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 48 (Shinkansen)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 512. After a short time in Aomori, it is time for Erk to return to Tokyo. It is warmer back at Shin-Aomori station as Erk does a bit of train spotting & warms up after the freezing snowy conditions, conditions he was not dressed for. Most of the return trip was in darkness which did not prevent the train from running at high speed. Erk also took the chance to have a bit of a snooze.

Erk FM: International 477 – Fresh & Pretty Orange

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 477. On this episode, Erk takes some suggestions from music supplier Jamendo. There's a good mix of music on this episode for you to enjoy from around the world including from America, France, Germany & Russia.

  Song list:

Erk Pod 511 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 48 (Aomori)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 511. Erk has arrived in Shin-Aomori north of Tokyo. Erk knew he was north of Tokyo but did not know until he asked the local tourist bureau that he in fact 713 rail kilometres north of Tokyo. Unlike the milder weather in Tokyo where snow is no longer falling, it is snowing hard in Shin-Aomori & nearby Aomori which is the downtown area served by the Shinkansens. One thing that Erk soon noticed way north of Tokyo was that English has basically disappeared. Erk explores the small local train system and the downtown area.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 151 – Whiplash Revisited (Sydney)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 151. This week, Erk re-presents one of his favourite on-location episodes from the 2012 Whiplash Festival from Sydney. It was the opening night of Erk's first music tour (especially as media) starting in Sydney then heading to Brisbane, Gosford, Newcastle, Canberra & Melbourne. The episode was originally released as Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 58 released in November 2012.

  Interviews:

Live tracks from the following bands (as recorded by Erk):

Erk Pod 510 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 48 (Shinkansen)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 510. Erk has made it to the main Tokyo Shinkansen platforms and has purchased a ticket to Shin-Aomori. He decided which train to ride based on some articles on the interweb which showed that this line is the fastest Shinkansen line in Japan. Erk is mainly going for the train ride rather than the destination.

Erk Pod 509 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 48 (Tokyo)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 509. Erk's original plan for today was to go to The Railway Museum but it was KLOSED. Lucky for Erk, he did his research first & did not go to the museum to find that out. Instead, Erk decides to go ride on a morning peak hour train on the Yamanote line to the main Tokyo station. It is a really interesting experience, especially for someone who does not normally commute to train in the morning peak hour back home.

Erk FM: Australia 476 – Western Australian Sampler

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 476. Erk continues his musical trip around Australia courtesy of AirPlay Direct, this time visiting Perth & Western Australia. Many local bands have issues traveling outside of Western Australia due to distance while many bands do not visit Western Australia for the same reason. It is so far between the west coast and the east coast of Australia that it is quicker and easier to fly to New Zealand from the east coast of Australia rather than fly to Western Australia. It has been said that Western Australia feels like another country due to the distances involved.

  Song list:

Erk FM: International 475 – The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Hiromi & Friends

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 475. On this episode, Erk's original plan was to feature a variety of bands from a variety of genres courtesy of AirPlay Direct. This changed, however, after hearing the first couple of artists. There is also has an announcement for Erk to make.

    Song list:

Erk Pod 508 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 47 (Tokyo)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 508. Erk decides to go for a walk in the local area around his hotel in Shinjuku. Exploring a local area on foot in an overseas country to see things that tourists normally doesn't see is something that Erk enjoys to do.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 150 – Celebrating With A Little Help From My Friends

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday 150. Another milestone episode as Erk celebrates 150 episodes. This podcast was started as an off-shoot from Erk FM in October 2011. Since then, Erk has presented a range of hard rock, industrial & various forms of metal from around the world. He has interviewed bands in a variety of locations including from the male toilets at a gig, around a kitchen table, back stage as well as on a cruise ship. There's been a range of gigs in front of half a dozen people to tours and cruise ships.

To open the episode, Erk has a couple of guests with him to tell him how to say the name of a certain band. Then Erk features a series of English bands supplied to Erk by Ro of Dark Compass. Speaking of Ro, there's a snippet from Erk's recent trip to the UK. There's also a lot of promos from various bands that have not been played for a while.

    Song list (all times approximate):

Erk Pod 507 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 47 (Tokyo)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 507. Erk decides to go for a walk in the local area around his hotel in Shinjuku. Exploring a local area on foot in an overseas country to see things that tourists normally doesn't see is something that Erk enjoys to do.

Erk Pod 506 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 46 (Tokyo)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 506. Erk's snow day continues in Shinjuku & the surrounding areas. Erk is having a great time in a new country after spending over 40 days in the US. The snow has added an extra dimension to Erk's Japanese experience as his previous trip was in the Japanese summer.

Erk Pod 505 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 46 (Tokyo)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 505. Erk explores snowy Tokyo and the subway systems. There are many options on the public transport systems and despite the snow, the trains are mostly running well. Also despite the snow, there are still many people out & about on the streets.

Erk FM: International 473 – Nanu Nanu

by Shawn

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 473. This week, one of Erk's favourite comedians died unexpectedly, Robin Williams. While there's nothing that he did that could be played on Erk FM, Erk thought that he would play some humourous songs instead.

    Song list:

Erk Pod 504 – Erk’s Pacamerican Circle Day 45 (Tokyo)

by Erk

Welcome to Erk Pod episode 504. Erk has been in America for over 40 days and this episode sees his first full day in Japan. His first visit to Japan was in 2011 & he stayed in Nippori. This time, Erk stays near Shinjuku. Having seen a lot of snow in recent weeks, Erk is not expecting the snow to disappear & his first full day in Japan sees that there is snow still around. In fact, Tokyo is recovering after the highest amount of snow in Tokyo for around 40 years a few days prior to Erk's arrival. Much like in 2011, Erk is amazed by what is going on around him although he is a little more prepared this time.
