Erk FM: Australia 348 – Attacking The Charts Hard!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 348. Erk has been at one EP launch last weekend (Hard As Nails) & has another one this weekend (Vanity Riots). There is a lot of great music out there & in Sydney this Saturday night, there is great music that Erk has featured on Erk FM before in at least 5 different venues on the one night. Somehow Erk wishes he could be in several places at once! This week, Erk also found that a band he has featured before on Erk FM are starting to gig again with a new lineup.

In an unusual move for an Australian indie/unsigned band, Melbourne female fronted hard rock band Bellusira are making an attack on the Australian music charts by encouraging people to pre-order their debut album Connection via JB Hi-fi. Online pre-orders will be signed by the band. In-store pre-orders are also available.

Music supplied by SGC Media, Insomnia Radio  & the artists directly. One track recorded live by Erk.

Erk FM: International 347 – The Northern Line Is Just A Dream

by Erk

Welcome to episode 347 of Erk FM: International. When Erk receives a song submission from a guy called Eric, Erk is happy.  When a song in the submission from a guy called Eric contains a train song, Erk is even happier! Best of all, Erk gets to share great music with you! Awesome!

Music supplied by Deuce Management & Promotion as well as the artists directly.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 86 – Deadfest 2013

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 86. Recorded on location at Deadfest 2013, there was an afternoon & evening filled with hard rock, industrial and metal. There are live recordings and interviews with all of the bands from the event in this extended episode. Just like last year's event (check out Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 85 if you haven't already), there was a great vibe from the event held at The Valve Bar, home to many a great live show in Sydney. And in case you didn't know, Deadman is a dirty, dirty boy.

  Interview list:

  • JJ Sirman, creator of The Suburban Movement documentary about the western Sydney metal scene
  • Civility Lost
  • Acey from Not Another Sequel Just Another Sequel & Buzz from BuzzArt - they weren't playing but still rocked up
  • The Damned Humans
  • Dead-Life
  • Na Maza
  • Domino
  • Acid Nymph
  • Foundry Road
  • Red Bee
  • Amodus
  • Attila (Coredea) & Don (Upside Miss Jane)

Erk FM: Australia 346 – Vanity Riots Ambulance EP Launch Interview

by Erk

Welcome to episode 346 of Erk FM: Australia. This episode consists of an interview with vocalist Monica from Sydney band Vanity Riots. No stranger to Erk FM, last year's Erkstock was their second last gig with their then lineup. After re-grouping and finding 2 new guitarists, Vanity Riots are back with a new EP called Ambulance. To support the launch of the EP and the new look Vanity Riots, the band are going on an east coast tour of Australia (full details on their website & social media pages).

During the wide-ranging interview, you will hear 3 songs from the new EP. First is the title track, Ambulance. The next track is called Bloodsucker. The third track is called I Love You Almost As Much As I Love Me.

Erk FM: International 345 – Jamming Around The World!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 345. On this episode, Erk looks at the most popular tracks on one of his music providers, Jamendo. There's music from the UK, US, France and somewhat surprisingly, South Africa.

  Music supplied by Jamendo.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 85 – Deadfest 2012 Replay

by Erk

Welcome to episode 85 of Erk FM Metal Monday. This is a replay of what was originally episode 24 of Erk FM: Metal Monday recorded on location at The Valve Bar in Sydney which hosted Deadfest 2012, an afternoon & evening of music put together by Deadman from Deadman Industries. This episode features interviews & live ambient recordings of music from the event with entertainment of some sort over a 12 hour period. Most bands were interviewed and/or had music featured on this episode.   Bands who played at Deadfest were NASJAP (Not Another Sequel, Just Another Prequel), Foundry Road, Domino, Na Maza, Jaded Empire, Amodus, LAB 64 & Empirical. There were also DJs who played during changeovers. Apart from people who were performing at the gig, Erk also spoke with Metal Matt from The Metal Matt Show as well as Buzz (formerly of A World Less Cruel, now starting  The Death Movement)

Next week's episode features content from Deadfest 2013.

Erk FM: Australia 344 – Australia Is An Island

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 344. This episode features Australians based in Australia, Australians based overseas & overseas residents now calling Australia home - all of which is fine with me! A mellower episode this week with some jazz, pop, country and/or western & a lot more.

  Music supplied by AirPlay Direct.

Song list (all times are approximate):

Erk FM: International 343 – Arresting Global Music!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 343 of Erk FM: International. As has happened before, Erk loves it when a new music supplier finds him. Erk loves it even more when a new music supplier sends him an episode's worth of music in one email - that saves Erk a lot of time! Erk also loves it when someone gives a guide on how to say their name - who knew that Nina would rhyme with China? There will be a range of music heard on this episode including an arresting song or two!

Music supplied by Global Radio Promo.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 84 – Deadfest 2013 Preview

by Erk

Welcome to episode 84 of Erk FM: Metal Monday. This week's episode is a preview of Deadfest 2013. Promoted & organised by Deadman from Deadman Industries, Deadfest 2012 was one of the best gigs that Erk attended in 2012. 2013 should be no exception as this preview episode reveals. There is a mixture of hard rock & various forms of metal. Like last year, Erk will be a media partner of the event. There will be interviews & live tracks from the event in a couple of weeks which also happened in 2012.

All music supplied by the artists & used with permission.

Erk FM: Australia 342 – The Newsagency Sessions Nailed It!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 342 of Erk FM: Australia. This episode provides a good mix of music that Erk has been seeing live recently & what Erk has coming up in future weeks.  There's also an update from The Voice in relation to Suns Of Cascadia vocalist Oscar. Interestingly, a vocalist's appearance on The Voice led me (once again) to The Newsagency in inner-western Sydney for a nice night of intimate live music. This also led to half the playlist for this week's episode.

Last weekend, Erk was pleased to be able to see Hard As Nails live for their first gig since Erkstock last year. Also, Erk was able to get a sneak preview of Vanity Riots' upcoming EP.

Erk FM: International 341 – Quirky Mayday!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 341. Radio Submit have made things really easy for Erk this week with an email with many bands on it. There is also a band that found Erk via Twitter. The episode starts off quirky, is a little bit up and down in style but this is what sometimes happens if a music supplier has a lot of bands of different styles on their books.

Music supplied by Radio Submit & the artists directly.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 83 – All American Metal Rocks!!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 83 of Erk FM: Metal Monday. With the recent & upcoming focus on Australian metal, Erk thought that he would look for some American metal & hard rock after his recent trip. Finding the music on this episode was interesting - Erk was directed down several wormholes while chatting with friends on Facebook & ended up getting caught up with the adventures of Charlie The Unicorn on YouTube. Another interesting thing to note was the difference between the music on the same supplier with the genre of "Metal" & the genre of "Heavy Metal".

Music supplied by AirPlay Direct and Radio Submit.

  Song list (all times approximate):

Erk FM: Australia 340 – An Australian Dose Of Insomnia

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 340. On this episode, Erk wanders back through the Insomnia Radio archives to find Australian artists. Some of the artists are well known to Erk while others are new discoveries. The aim of Erk FM is to find new music and present it. An awesome aspect of podcasting is that it is usually non-competive and people are happy to share, Erk included.

All music supplied by Insomnia Radio.

Erk FM: International 339 – Sneaking Around At 3am

by Erk

Welcome to episode 339 of Erk FM: International. Thankfully recovered from last week's dental procedure, Erk is gold, man! Still wading through music submissions from his time in the US, Erk features a band with his real name in the title, a couple of tunes from a fellow podcaster & a lot more. There's even a sneak peek into a new talk podcast by Erk!

Music supplied by Deuce Management & Promotion, SGC Media, Ambicon Records, Jamendo, Music Alley & the artists directly.

  Song list (all times approximate):

Erk FM: Metal Monday 82 – Rock Chick Central!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 82 of Erk FM: Metal Monday. Inspired by a conversation with Ro (Dark Compass) and Kimmi (The Metal Deli) and also by a couple of gigs during the week, Erk decided to put together all the so-called rock chicks that he has seen over the last year or so onto the one episode. While it might be the case that these women are fronting rock bands, you don't need to be fronting a rock or metal band to have the rock chick persona going on.

All music supplied directly by the artists & used with permission.

Erk FM: Australia 338 – Welcome Back To The SGC!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 338. Erk likes it when PR companies help to make creating a playlist really easily. On this episode, Erk features some artists who have been on Erk FM: Australia before with new music to promote. It is also good when the PR company lets Erk know about a band in his home city that he had no idea existed! Now that Erk knows they exist,  you will also know they exist because you are listening.

During the week, Erk received a couple of song requests & did not want to say no! He also snuck some metal onto the show but it is very relevant to the song prior!

All music supplied by  SGC Media & the artists directly.

  Song list (all times approximate):

Erk FM: International 337 – A Little Less Wisdom & A Bit More Catching Up!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 337 of Erk FM: International. Erk's been to the dentist (at 2.30, no less!) so we'll see how well he can talk. The first 2 songs could be described as novelty signs, especially the second song Erk first heard on the Halfway Around The World podcast. The first 2 songs are really topical for a music podcaster. Most of the artists in the rest of the episode are returning artists to Erk FM who have supplied him music on more than one occasion.

Music supplied by Woosh, AirPlay Direct and the artists directly - used with permission.

Song list (all times are approximate):

Erk FM: Metal Monday 81 – It’s A Long Way To The Top!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 81 of Erk FM: Metal Monday. Recently, Erk was pleased to be able to see Australian rock legend Dave Evans live as part of an AC/DC tribute show. Dave was the original vocalist of legendary Australian rock band AC/DC & has been rocking in various bands for over 40 years.
At the end of 2010, Erk was lucky enough to be able to interview Dave (originally recorded as Erk FM episode 127). After chatting via social media since the interview, Erk & Dave finally met after the show in April 2013. Not long after this Australian show, Dave headed overseas to Europe for another tour.
Erk presents highlights from the original interview as well as some songs from Dave's album Sinner. Thank you to Dave for allowing me to play his music. As Erk has often said, Dave Evans doesn't need Erk's help to get his music out there but he allows Erk to do so anyway.

Erk FM: Australia 336 – Erkstock Revisited!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia episode 336. On this episode, Erk thought that he would revisit his debut gig as a promoter last year, Erkstock. Held to celebrate his birthday, Erk selected a range of bands to play at the Valve Bar in Sydney. With a range of female fronted rock & metal, everyone who attended the show & stayed longer than 5 minutes enjoyed themselves. So what have the bands who played Erkstock been doing since August last year? On this episode, we'll find out. We'll also find out for the very first time some of the other bands on Erk's wishlist for the event (Erkstock 2? LOL).

It's not often that someone who has been on Erk FM gets themselves on national TV but Suns of Cascadia vocalist Oscar has done exactly that. Appearing on the 2013 season of The Voice on Channel 9, Oscar had his blind audition shown during the week & has progressed to the next stage. Erk will be keen to see how he progresses. Good luck, Oscar! Follow his progress here.

Erk FM: International 335 – Catching Up

by Erk

Welcome to episode 335 of Erk FM: International. During his time in the US, Erk had many music submissions via email. On this episode, Erk tries to catch up on the submissions. Some of the artists (for instance Sam Page & Postcode) have been played on Erk FM before while many of the other artists are new here. It is also good when artists refer other artists to Erk or let him know about side projects they are working on.

Music supplied by Ambicon Records & the artists directly.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 80 – Opening For Cradle Of Filth …?

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Metal Monday episode 80. For something a little different this week, there are several bands who are competing for an opening spot to support Cradle Of Filth. I saw what a similar opportunity meant to Tensions Arise in 2012 when they supported Jeffery Nothing & hed PE in Sydney. Rather than me voting for bands (as suggested by several of the bands I follow online), I thought that I would instead showcase those who I have played on Erk FM: Metal Monday.
There are spots available for shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Perth (Fremantle). The city that each band are competing to play in are shown below. The music comes from the voting app on Facebook - Erk FM: Metal Monday has featured all of these bands before. Song names in many instances are not known to Erk so there will be no song listings this week. Bands are featured in the order they appear on the voting app.
Votes close on Sunday 21 April at midnight Sydney time & there are ticket giveaways for fans who vote. So how do you vote? Voting is via Facebook - bands involved will provide you with a link...

Erk FM: Australia 334 – Erk Returns To The Studio!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM:  Australia episode 334. Back from his America trip & with the 70000 Tons Of Metal special series completed on Erk FM: Metal Monday, Erk is back in the Erk FM studio & is now catching up with what he missed while he was away. Because of the trip, the associated preparations and the extra content upon returning, Erk has not been to many gigs in Australia lately. His last gig before leaving for the US was Evil Ugly's single launch featuring Domino & his first Australian gig for 2013 was Domino's album launch. If you've ever seen Domino live and/or heard them on Erk FM, you are in for a treat.   In addition, Andy Mac has been busy not only getting his KANG out but also launching himself as a solo artist (The Andy Mac Experience? LOL). Does this mean no more Simpsons references, Andy? There's also a couple of artists who have had a name change since the last time they were played on Erk FM.    Aimee Francis has been jet-setting just like Erk. Arriving into America just after Erk left, Aimee's fresh from an appearance at 2013 SXSW & touring around the US. Quite appropriately,...

Erk FM: International 333 – On The Road Past The Point Of No Return

by Erk

Welcome to episode 333 of Erk FM: International. Erk is back from his trip to the US & his cruise on 70000 Tons Of Metal. Back in the studio after spending March on trip related content, here is a small sample of music that Erk got to see live on the trip. Of course, if Erk did not have a metal podcast, this episode could be filled with metal. But because he does have a metal podcast, most of that metal will not be heard here but on Erk FM: Metal Monday.
An early highlight of Erk's trip was to New Orleans, arguably the jazz capital of the world. Regardless of if you are on world famous (or infamous?) Bourbon Street, Frenchman Street or one of the many side streets in the French Quarter, there is always plenty of music to catch up with.
The first band Erk caught, he found playing in one of many clubs on Frenchman Street. Dominck Grillo & The Frenchmen St All Stars are aptly named as a result. The second band on the episode were one of many quality buskers that Erk found in & around Bourbon Street. While they might have been busking at...

Erk FM: Metal Monday 79 – Back From 70000 Tons!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 79 of Erk FM: Metal Monday. Erk is now back from America & 70000 Tons Of Metal and is now back in the Erk FM: Metal Monday studio. Erk is wading through his email inbox with metal submitted and suggested while he was away. If you are a listener & know of a band who would like to be played on Erk FM: Metal Monday, suggest them to Erk & then he will contact them.   There's been some changes in the Erk FM: Metal Monday studio since the end of Erk's trip & thankfully last week's technical problems are sorted.   Music supplied by the artists directly, via 70000 Tons Of Metal & Rock N Growl Records.   Song list (times are approximate):

Erk FM: Australia 332 – Swinging In The Breeze Before Erk Returns To The Studio!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 332 of Erk FM: Australia. There is one week to go before Erk returns to the Erk FM studio to present more Australian music after his epic US trip. Always looking to do something different, Erk presents two artists of different styles that are not staple genres on Erk FM. All music supplied by Radio Submit.

Erk FM: International 331 – Next Stop Japan?

by Erk

Welcome to episode 331 of Erk FM: International. This is the final episode of March 2013 and the last episode that Erk pre-recorded before leaving Australia for the US. Erk's next overseas destination may be Japan. Erk visited Japan for a week in 2011 but wants to go back. He didn't see a lot of music being played live when he was in Japan apart from street performers but as this episode shows, there is Japanese talent out there as well as imports to Japan from other countries.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 78 – 70000 Tons Of Metal (Part 4)

by Erk

Welcome to the final episode of Erk FM: Metal Monday's coverage of 70000 Tons Of Metal for 2013 aboard The Majesty Of The Seas. This episode, Erk presents all of the bands that he purchased CDs from during the cruise or afterwards. By the time that Erk was able to buy merchandise on day 2 of the cruise, not all bands have CDs available. Erk FM: Australia 330 – Hopping Around After Being Late For Breakfast

by Erk

Welcome to episode 330 of Erk FM: Australia. There's a variety of songs on this week's episode - some of these songs have appeared on Erk FM before, others are new. Erk doesn't have a lot to say on this episode which makes a change for him!

Erk FM: International 329 – Jamaica? Nah, She Wanted To Go!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 329 of Erk FM: International. Considering that Erk cruised around part of the Caribbean during his recent US trip, it is a good time to feature some music from Jamaica. Even though he didn't make it as far as Jamaica, Erk has thought for some time that Jamaican music is cool, mun.

Erk FM: Metal Monday 77 – 70000 Tons Of Metal (Part 3)

by Erk

Welcome to the third week of Erk FM: Metal Monday's coverage of 70000 Tons Of Metal 2013 on board The Majesty Of The Seas. Over the first 2 days of the cruise, Erk saw every band. Every band has now been featured on either one of the previous two episodes. On this episode, there are interviews with musicians as well as other content including highlights from Thursday's press conference that Erk attended. These press conferences were a great opportunity to find out about the behind the scenes aspects of 70000 Tons. It was a pleasure to meet the man in charge of The Majesty Of The Seas, the Master of the ship. If that is not enough, Erk also plays some tracks from bands who played on the cruise. Interviews with members of: Tiamat Doro Flotsam & Jetsam Turisas Anacrusis Song list: The Scarred People - Tiamat Free My Heart - Doro Play Your Part - Flotsam & Jetsam Fear The Fear - Turisas Sound The Alarm - Anacrusis Angelus - Subway To Sally Start Swimming - Delain Leshiy - Arkona Metal Woman - 3 Inches Of Blood

by Erk

Welcome to episode 326 of Erk FM: Australia. This week (and last week), Erk provides some airplay for some artists who featured at Progfest 2012 in Australia. While Erk was not at the festival (it was around the same time as the Whiplash festival that Erk did cover on Erk FM: Metal Monday), it would have been a nice festival to cover. All music courtesy of Welkin Entertainment.

Erk FM: International 327 – More Ladies!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: International episode 327. Erk hasn't done a ladies only special for some time (apart from last week's episode) so now is as good as time as any! There's a lot to be said for some awesome female vocals regardless of the style!

Erk FM: Australia 324 – Dominotastic!

by Erk

Welcome to Erk FM: Australia 324. This episode is dedicated to Sydney arabian prog-rock band Domino. Domino are no strangers to Erk FM - Erk has enjoyed being front and centre at many Domino gigs over the last couple of years & has followed their progress closely. To date they have released their 2007 EP Shadows & Dust and are just about to release their debut album Where The Desert Meets The Sea. The launch gig for the album will be on Saturday March 16 at The Valve Bar, Tempe (Sydney). To celebrate, Erk features studio & live tracks from Domino as well as a couple of interviews. The first interview was recorded in December 2011 at Domino's rehearsal studio in Sydney & gives a good overview about the band. The second interview was recorded a year later (December 2012) at The Valve Bar & talks more about 2012 Domino style as well as about the new album.

70000 Tons Of Metal Review

by Erk

70000 Tons Of Metal. 40 bands. 1 cruise ship. 2000 tickets.     I spent weeks of looking at the official website. I spent weeks of researching the 30 bands that were announced prior to me leaving Australia. Once I made the decision to do the cruise, there was weeks of planning my trip from Australia to America with a post cruise side trip to Mexico. There were weeks of envious friends from Australia & New Zealand asking me about the trip and in some cases begging me to take them with me. And no, guys, there was no luck involved.   This was my first 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise and I hope that it will not be the last. My main aim of the trip was to see/hear great music and share it with the world via my Erk FM: Metal Monday podcast.  I have covered local Australian gigs, events and festivals. I have seen international bands before however this was the first time that I would only be seeing bands from outside Australia. This was truly an international event and I was on the world stage.   You would think...

Erk FM: International 323 – Zoom Zoom!

by Erk

Welcome to episode 323 of Erk FM: International. On this episode, you might not be able to guess the reason behind the title of the episode. The title is more related to the episode rather than the music in the episode. The photo might be a clue....

Erk FM: Metal Monday 74 – Trashy Deathy Metally

by Erk

Welcome to episode 74 of Erk FM: Metal Monday. On this episode, Erk features a mixture of Trash & Death Metal. With the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise coverage about to start on Erk FM: Metal Monday, Trash & Death Metal seems to be an appropriate choice for this week's show.
