Erk Pod History

Erk Pod is a personal podcast produced in Sydney each week that features news, sport, entertainment, music and more. Erk Pod started in May 2007, primarily as a personal look at the Australian reality TV show “Big Brother” in episodes called “Erk to the Diary Room”. It started after Erk listened to podcasts such as Reality Cast and Big Brother Weekly and he thought “I can do that!”

It started as a “no bells & whistles” podcast that was recorded on a Digital Voice Recorder until episode 18. Episodes 19 to 40 were recorded on my laptop and a headset mic. Episodes 41 onwards are usually recorded using a mixer unless Erk is either conducting a Skype interview or doing an episode out of the studio. As of episode 91, Erk has the option of using a sweet Zoom H4 Voice Recorder.

When Big Brother finished mid way in 2007, Erk Pod became the type of show it is now and moved into talking more about various issues. Drue joined the show as a co-host from episode 65 and is a welcome addition to the show. Episode 67 saw Erk chat with Geek News Central’s Todd Cochrane as a part of Todd’s 24 Hour Podcast marathon at the end of December 2007. From then, Erk has been conducting the occasional interview with guests and has been encouraging more guests to come onto the show.

From December 2007, Erk started the separate podcast “Erk to the Diary Room” which will continued in 2008. Previously, ETTDR was part of the Erk Pod feed. It became a separate feed and there was no Big Brother talk in Erk Pod. All previous ETTDR content from the early Erk Pod episodes are now on this feed and the ETTDR site. Due to the way the early episodes were numbered, each ETTDR episode is still given an Erk Pod episode number and counts towards the number of Erk Pod episodes. Erk Pod listeners/subscribers who do not listen to ETTDR may notice certain episode numbers missing for this reason.

From 1 January 2008, Erk started a 5 minute daily podcast called “Erk Pod Mini: 365 Days of Erk”. Inspired by the 24 Hour Podcast, Erk realised that some people have limited time and may not want to listen to the larger episodes. The aim was to produce a show each day regardless of how I felt, where I was or what I was doing. The content is supposed to compliment the main Erk Pod episodes and is a daily diary of Erk, I suppose. This run of consecutive shows ended after Erk’s computer died after Erk Pod Round Table 2 in February. But apart from those 2 days, Erk had not missed a daily episode. Erk Pod Mini episodes have a separate feed and episode numbering system but content is on the main Erk Pod website (ie this one). However, producing ETTDR, Erk Pod, work and personal issues meant that at the beginning of May that Erk Pod Mini changed from a daily podcast to a highlights show of Erk Pod Maxi.

Erk Pod is produced usually on a weekly basis and runs between 45 and 90 minutes and contains news, entertainment, talking and more. Erk Pod is sometimes serious, sometimes funny, sometimes totally down the wrong track but is always entertaining (WE HOPE!) and is hosted by Erk & Drue.

In 2008, Erk gathered a group of people live and online for Erk Pod Round Table. There were a range of topics and discussions discussed over a longer period divided into at least 2 episodes. Each episode in itself was usually about an hour long. Each Round Table went for a minimum of 2 hours and a range of topics were been discussed. After a full year of Round Tables, Erk put the concept on hold for 2009.

Also during November 2008, Erk took part in NaPodPoMo (National Podcasting Post Month) and encouraged Drue, Orange Tim & Squeak to produce their own daily shows. All 4 people produced their own show each day. Erk produced “Echo Romeo Kilo”, Drue produced “Da Novemba Advencha”, Orange Tim produced “Despatches From Agent Orange” & Squeak produced “A Podcast For November”. Erk’s show continued in a different format after November ended while Drue & Orange Tim have produced occasional episodes since.

In 2009, Erk went for a 2 month trip to the United States, producing 20 episodes of Erk Pod while there. There were many interviews with podcasters and authors as part of the trip. The trip was a great way for Erk to meet many podcasters who he’d only spoken to via Skype or heard online via their podcasts.
