On The Rails With Erk

Me Puffing Billy August 2013

NOTE: Due to Erk’s time out of Australia in early 2014, this show is on a hiatus. That said, Erk will be recording content for the show in America (January/February), Japan (February), Singapore (February), Perth (April), UAE (June), Germany (possibly – June) & London (June). The show will return in the first quarter of 2014.

On The Rails With Erk is a personal railway podcast. Erk has been employed in the railway industry for nearly 20 years (hard to believe!) in a range of roles including customer service, station presentation, law enforcement, security & train operations. The views in this podcast are general in nature & are personal to Erk & that of any contributor. They do not necessarily reflect the current or previous procedures or policies of Erk’s employer or other operators. Different operators & sectors of the industry have different terminology & methods specific to their sector.

So why a railway podcast?

Another interest of Erk’s is travel and aviation. Erk has noticed over several years that there are a lot of great aviation podcasts by people inside & outside the industry but very little in the way of railway podcasts. The industry traditionally does not allow their employees to speak to the media & there always seems to be some sort of secrecy about the industry. Compare the number of ride-along police shows such as COPS or fly on the wall shows at various airports around the world & similar railway shows as a classic example.

While using social media & during other podcasts, Erk is often asked about railways & his job by interested people. When people find out what Erk does for a living (he is currently a train driver), people are usually full of questions.  While he has spoken about trains on his talk podcast Erk Pod over several years on occasion, this podcast is dedicated to all things on rails. He has thought about a railway podcast for several years but became more sold on the idea while listening to The Airline Pilot Guy podcast. Hosted by Captain Jeff from the fictional airline Acme, he gives informed opinion about aviation news and incidents as well as the questions that you wish you could ask an airline pilot but you don’t happen to know one personally. This podcast aims to be similar in style to Captain Jeff’s show but in Erk’s style.

Erk has travelled extensively on the urban passenger rail networks in Australia as a passenger along with several trips on long distance passenger trains. Also, Erk has travelled on metro type systems in North America, Europe, the UK & parts of Asia as well as high speed and/or long distance rail in those areas.

On The Rails With Erk 008 – Passengering With Erk

by Erk

Welcome to episode 8 of On The Rails With Erk. On this episode, Erk has a confession, an apology, a question & a preview of 2014. On this episode, Erk's question has more to do with where Erk can sit if he is on duty but not driving his train. The process is often referred to as "travelling passenger" & Erk explains what he could be doing instead of driving the train. There are several reasons why this could happen & Erk has several reasons for travelling how he does if he is not in charge of his train.   Erk is going to have a big 2014 of travel & you can come for a ride. Erk will be travelling on the rail systems of San Francisco, Portland, Miami, Atlanta & Chicago (US) during January & February 2014. On his way home, Erk returns home via Asia & will ride the rails of Japan & Singapore. Returning home briefly, then Erk flies to the other side of Australia (Perth) in March. Then comes a trip to England via the UAE & (possibly) Europe in June 2014.

On The Rails With Erk 007 – Puffing Billy, Melbourne

by Erk

Welcome to episode 7 of On The Rails With Erk. On this episode, Erk goes back in time & rides the Puffing Billy Railway in Melbourne between Belgrave, Menzies Creek & Emerald.  Many of the staff are volunteers (over 900 volunteers!) and the line runs in difficult country in the Dandengong Ranges.  Originally serving as the area's main transport link, the 100 year old railway is preserved & runs as it would in the 1920's, there are several services every day with the exception of Christmas Day.   Riding a current day suburban electric train to or from Belgrave is a great way to contrast with this train. Allow 1/2 a day as a minimum if you are in Melbourne.   Further reading:

Welcome to episode 6 of On The Rails With Erk. Originally recorded in late August 2013, Erk heads to Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne has the largest tram/light rail network in the southern hemisphere & a large suburban rail network.

Erk starts near his hotel, riding a route 48 tram from Docklands to Southern Cross station. After some facts at Southern Cross station, Erk rides a suburban train around the City Loop from Southern Cross to Parliament station before boarding another train to Belgrave. We even had a visit from Authorised Officers checking tickets.

On The Rails With Erk 005 – The Train On Platform 5 Is Delayed….

by Erk

Welcome to episode 5 of On The Rails With Erk. It hardly seems like a month since the last episode but it has. Since episode 4, Erk has been to the Gold Coast for a weekend & well as many shifts on the rails.   On the Gold Coast of Queensland, Erk was able to explore some of the construction of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project.  Stage 1 will open in mid 2014 linking the northern half of the Gold Coast strip (Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise) to the new Gold Coast Hospital & education precinct.   The main part of this episode deals with the elephant in the room that every train passenger has an opinion on - "WHY IS MY TRAIN LATE?"

On The Rails 004 – On The Rails In Sydney

by Erk

Welcome to episode 4 of On The Rails With Erk. On this episode, Erk is on location in his home city in Sydney.   Starting at Central station, there was a special train display for the Queen's Birthday long weekend. There was a range of locomotives & carriages from the steam & diesel eras as well as steam train rides.   Moving across to the suburban platforms, Erk takes you on a ride on a suburban train ride on a Waratah train from Central to Milsons Point which includes crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Milsons Point has been selected as a trial location for new public transport signage.   Returning to Central, Erk went on a hertiage train ride led by steam locomotive 3642 & diesel locomotive 4520 on the rear.   Finally, Erk takes you on a railed ride with a difference - the Sydney Monorail. Due to various reasons, the monorail will stop operating on 30 June after 25 years of service between the Sydney CBD & Darling Harbour.   Further reading:

On The Rails With Erk 003 – On The Rails Of Adelaide

by Erk

Welcome to episode 3 of On The Rails With Erk. On this occasion, Erk is on location in Adelaide, South Australia. Beginning his short trip at the Adelaide railway station, he catches a train to Dudley Park station on the Gawler line. The current Adelaide train system is undergoing a major transformation with 2 lines closed at the time of Erk's visit in May 2013. The first stages of electrification are underway - currently all trains are diesel powered railcars. Returning to the city, Erk goes for a ride on the tram system through the city centre. An addition to the Glenelg line since his last visit, the new trams and the extension between Victoria Square & the Entertainment Centre are a part of a wider plan to improve public transit in Adelaide.
