Industrial/Looping interviews

Mainly for convenience, Erk has placed Industrial & Looping artists together. They can be two different beasts.

Industrial music is as the name suggests. Often regarded as a sub-genre of rock or metal, the main industrial artist that Erk has interviewed is Jordan Reyne. She uses samples of industrial type sounds & combines them with playing instruments to re-create what it would sound like in a factory.

Jordan also uses a process called looping, as does Matt Stevens. They record a short sample & use a looping pedal to record and repeat the sample. Jordan loops both vocals and guitar while Matt loops only guitar.

Some artists can fit into 2 or more categories depending on their methods & style. For instance, I have placed Matt Stevens & Jordan Reyne in both the acoustic & industrial/looping sections of this website.

  • How Wikipedia defines industrial music?: Industrial music is a style of experimental music that draws on transgressive and provocative themes. The term was coined in the mid-1970s with the founding of Industrial Records by the band Throbbing Gristle, and the creation of the slogan “industrial music for industrial people”. In general, the style is harsh and challenging. Allmusic defines industrial as the “most abrasive and aggressive fusion of rock and electronic music”; “initially a blend of avant-garde electronics experiments (tape music, musique concrète, white noise, synthesizers, sequencers, etc.) and punk provocation” Read more

  • How Wikipedia defines looping?: In electroacoustic music, a loop is a repeating section of sound material. Short sections of material can be repeated to create ostinato patterns. A loop can be created using a wide range of music technologies including digital samplers, synthesisers, sequencers, drum machines, tape machines, delay units, or they can be programmed using computer music software.
