A Moment In Time

There is an old saying that everyone is capable of writing at least one book. After thinking about it for some time, Erk was going to write an autobiographical style book about his work experiences on the railway. However, when exactly is the best time to do that? With 16 years of experiences in the industry and potentially another 30 years in the future before retirement, there’s no one time that would be suitable. But in April 2010, Erk was inspired to write a novel.

He had spent an evening talking and listening to author and podcaster Scott Sigler. He was currently featured in the podiobook version of Kenn Crawford’s Canadian Zombie Novel Dead Hunt, playing the role of an Australian backpacker. And while driving his train around the Bankstown Circle in Sydney, he was listening to RE Chambliss‘ podiobook Dreaming of Deliverance. During this trip, Erk decided that he was going to write a novel. It was the afternoon of Thursday April 1, 2010.

The ideas flowed. Words came. The word count increased on a daily basis. Reading and listening to other writers was very helpful via podcasts including Mur Lafferty’s podcast I Should Be WritingThe Dead Robots’ Society podcast as well as the Sydney Writers’ Centre podcast. Attending Worldcon/Aussiecon in Melbourne in September 2010 was also very handy.

This novel is called “A Moment In Time” with the Twitter hashtag of #operationmoment. Erk is on Twitter (a lot!) as @erkpod if you want to follow his progress there. You can also interact with Erk on Facebook on the A Moment In Time Facebook fan page.

The book is set in modern day Sydney and all of the story occurs on Thursday 01 April 2010. It is the day before the Easter long weekend and most people in Sydney are looking forward to an extended break from their working lives. Looking at the world through the eyes of several ordinary working women who are doing (some would say) extraordinary jobs, the book is written from multiple points of view. The women who are the main characters in the story are all going about their respective lives and in one moment in time that day, there will be an incident that will see their roles combine. Their collective lives will change for ever.

Erk uses his knowledge of various jobs (first hand and otherwise) and brings them all together. There are little pieces of Erk’s life and experiences through this realistic novel. While there are highly realistic scenes in this book, there are fiction elements to the story. In other words, this book is not an edition of “Train Driving For Dummies”, for instance.

As the project progressed, you can follow how the book is going. Erk will update this page as required. Erk wrote this novel online and using an iPhone application called My Writing Nook. This way, if he is out and about or wherever, he wrote using a computer with an internet connection or his iPhone. Around 98% of the book was written on the iPhone with a smaller (but still significant) amounts of editing also done on the phone. The book was written on trains, on planes, on railway stations and airports in other places during down time.

Partly to celebrate his 5 year anniversary of driving trains and also his 3 years of podcasting, Erk wrote the book first, self-published it and later read it as a podcast. To learn more about the book including behind the scenes information, click on the graphics below. There will also be interviews and behind the scenes information in the podcast version once the story has been completed.

It has been a lot of fun to write this book and it has been a great learning experience. With the exception of the final cover, Erk did all of the formatting and layout for the book. The graphics for the final cover (see above) is by Erk’s good friend Thorium Girl. Great job, TG!

A Moment In Time – Chapter 10: Caroline’s First Job

by Erk

Welcome to Chapter 10 of A Moment In Time – Erk’s debut novel in podcast form.   In this chapter, Police Officer Caroline has been awaiting this moment for months. She is working her first shift as a fully trained Police Officer and along with her partners Leila & Nicole, she is speeding towards Central railway station. It is the start of the afternoon rush hour and everyone wants to go home. Somehow though, if you add some action to the mix, some people are happy to stand around and get in the way of everyone.   Related posts: A Moment In Time – Chapter 1: Rise & Shine, Caroline! A Moment In Time – Chapter 11: Katrina To The Rescue

by Erk

Welcome to Chapter 11 of A Moment In Time – Erk’s debut novel in podcast form.   In this chapter, it is time for Rescue Operator Katrina to put her recent training into action. While the rescue training was extensive, it could not cover every scenario. This scenario was very real. It was going to be a difficult rescue and Paramedic Natalie has just made it that little bit harder, dirtier, smeller and cramped for Katrina by requesting her pair of hands, specifically.   Related posts: A Moment In Time – Chapter 12: Natalie To The Rescue A Moment In Time – Chapter 6: Katrina Gets A Job A Moment In Time – Chapter 13: Goodnight, A Platoon! A Moment In Time – Chapter 12: Natalie To The Rescue

by Erk

Welcome to Chapter 12 of A Moment In Time – Erk’s debut novel in podcast form.   In this chapter, Paramedic Natalie needs another pair of hands in a confined space. Looking at the emergency workers on the scene, Natalie could only see one solution. This would mean teamwork with a person that she did not know. At that stage though, Natalie could not be choosy. What was she doing there, anyway? Isn’t her job to get there as quick as possible, start treatment and then move on to the next job when the crew arrives?   Related posts: A Moment In Time – Chapter 7: Run, Natalie, Run! A Moment In Time – Chapter 16: Natalie’s Shout

by Erk

Welcome to Chapter 16 of A Moment In Time – Erk’s debut novel in podcast form.   Paramedic Natalie is having a bad day. In her eyes, she is doing her job to the best of her ability. She is getting to the calls quickly and treating the patient, often in difficult circumstances. Her boss does not agree. He thinks that her high powered rapid response motorcycle is spending more time on its kickstand than what it is under lights and sirens. With the day that she has had, the end of the shift is not going to be pretty. At least she has a date with 2 overseas paramedics to look forward to at the end of the shift!   Related posts: A Moment In Time – Chapter 7: Run, Natalie, Run! A Moment In Time – Chapter 17: Steve’s Struggle

by Erk

Welcome to Chapter 17 of A Moment In Time – Erk’s debut novel in podcast form.   Steve has had an epic struggle. Everyone who has seen him is very surprised that he is still alive. They have not written him off as a lost cause but he has defied the odds and is not dead. However, he has a lot a fighting to do with a long road of recovery ahead of him. His first goal (if he was able to think logically about it) is to last the night, hour by hour. If he does not hold on, the hard and dirty work of many would have been for nothing.   This is the final chapter of A Moment In Time. Thank you to everyone for listening as well as those people who have purchased the print or e-books. Thank you to the people who have contributed to the project, especially those people that I have based or named characters on. Thank you to Amodus for supplying the theme tune, Negative.
