Even though I have Erk Pod 208 waiting to drop in a few days after Erk Pod 207 was released, I am ready to announce Erk Pod episode 200!
Episode 200 snuck up on me when I was in the US and if I had it in order, it would have happened on the East Coast of the US. I much preferred to have the episode back at home in the Erk Pod studio.
The plan for Episode 200 is for it to be a live episode with audio streaming via uStream. This will be the first live streaming episode of Erk Pod this year. It will be run to a strict 2 hour time limit and will be different to last year’s Round Tables. People appearing will not be on the line all at once but separately. When people aren’t appearing, they are welcome to listen via uStream. Guests will exclusively appear via Skype.
The episode will commence at 12 noon on Sunday 5th July, Sydney time. For our American friends, it will commence on Saturday 4th July at 7pm Pacific, 9pm Central, 10pm Eastern.
If you are interested in appearing on the show, please let me know. If you can’t make it, feel free to send either a voice mail or an MP3 file to erkpod@gmail.com. The voice mail number is 02 8003 6905 (Australia), +61.2 8003 6905 (International) or via Skype ID erkpod. If you can’t send an audio message, feel free to email me erkpod@gmail.com or comment here.
Welcome to episode 207 of Erk Pod. This really should have been episode 206 as Erk explains at the start of the episode. This episode was recorded with the assistance of some alcohol at the Super 8 LAX Airport just prior to leaving for the US. This is the last Erk Pod episode recorded in the US. Erk provides an update about his last week in the US and what he did on his last day in the US.
The next episode of Erk Pod will be episode 208 which will cover Erk’s flight home to Australia and a couple of things that have happened since being home.

Where on Earth is Tanzania? That’s a very good question and new media producer and member of the Sydney Twitteratti Stilgherrian is about to find out. For a while now, Stil (who appeared on the Erk Pod going away episode 174) has been mentioning #TOTO on Twitter and preparations for it.
So what is #TOTO? It turns out that Stil had a mission to go halfway around the world to Tanzania to help create a blog network for the locals and to experience life in a third world country in Africa, Project TOTO. The trip is in conjunction with the charity Action Aid Australia who are trying to use Stil’s knowledge and experiences there to increase the awareness of the situation in Africa.
South Park fans might remember an episode where the boys wanted a Tekio sports watch after seeing an advertisement on TV and ended up with an Ethopian boy they dubbed Starvin’ Marvin. In the end, Cartman sees for himself what it is like to be hungry in that environment. I wonder if Stil has seen that episode?
He has been doing his research (by watching that episode of South Park? Who knows?) and getting physically and mentally ready for the trip. He has been gathering supplies and working out what will work and what won’t. How will a man who is heavily attached to technology, gadgets and the interweb in inner western Sydney going to cope on the other side of the world in a totally different environment? Through his blog, we will find out how he goes with the technology (or lack thereof), the locals and the weather.
Before he left, I gathered with other members of the Sydney Twitteratti to farewell Stil in what was called the “Going Away And Maybe Not Coming Back” party. A few of us took part in this farewell video filled with useful (and maybe not so useful) tips, suggestions and good wishes. I thought he was going for a long time which was hard enough but he has to travel, set up, get used to the climate, report back and then come back in an 8 day period. As if the challenge wasn’t hard enough! Assuming that all goes well, you can follow Stil’s adventure via his website and Twitter @stilgherrian. He departed Sydney without incident on Friday 27 June 2009 and I hope to find out more about the adventure for Erk Pod when he returns.
GOOD LUCK, STIL!
WARNING: THERE IS SOME STRONG LANGUAGE IN THIS VIDEO.
Welcome to episode 21 of Blast From The Past. This is the first Blast episode recorded since Erk returned from his US trip. On this episode, we talk a little about the trip and also deal with feedback given by various people about recent shows.
The next episode will be Blast From The Past 23 and we’ll find out about problems that Judy had while Erk was away and we’ll find out about things that irked Erk while he was away.

This morning (Friday) Australian time, I was waiting for my first train of the morning. I was reading Twitter from my mobile phone and there were reports coming in from news organisations and general tweeters that Michael Jackson was being rushed to hospital after possibly suffering a heart attack. There were early reports that he had in fact died. My train arrived and I turned off my phone.
When I next turned my phone on, I was reading a few people’s tweets paying tribute to the singer. At that stage, I knew that he must have indeed died. I went back looking for tweets from the news organisations that I had reading from before and they indeed confirmed that Michael Jackson had died at the age of 50.
Needless to say, there was a LOT of reaction on Twitter. There was the memorial type messages from fans and other people. There were numerous joke posts which normally occurs during this sort of event. However, I’d never seen them this quickly. Then there were posts from people (me included) who were wondering if people were going to change their avatar (icon) in a show of mourning or support like there has been for other causes including “Blackout” to support New Zealand’s internet users or the recent results of the Iran election.
As for me, I can remember Michael Jackson in his earlier days (not quite the Jackson 5 era but close enough to it) when he came out and sold many records with songs like “Thriller” and “Bad”. I can remember as a child doing the moonwalk and attempting to breakdance like so many others surely did. I can remember when he made an appearance on The Simpsons as a white mental patient and he sung “Happy Birthday Lisa” to Lisa.
Michael Jackson was an extremely talented man but there was also the numerous dramas that were shown in the media over the last few years which had a massive effect on him. There will be people who reflect on these dramas today who didn’t see the talent that I (and many others) saw years earlier. Indeed, I wondered this morning “What has Michael Jackson done lately?” and I heard he was planning a comeback tour next year in London.
Over the last few years, it could be said that he didn’t use his full talents and that it is a shame that he died when he did. We’ll never see if the comeback would have been successful or not. But will his death lead people to re-discover his music? Will a whole new generation of people find his back catalogue and become fans? More than likely, I think.
So what do I think of the reaction that I saw on Twitter this morning? I could be surprised about what I saw on Twitter this morning with the many varied posts this morning. But with social media tools like Facebook and Twitter, the person on the street can say things that previously, they might have been only able to say to their family or friends or the people in the meal room at work. Now, you can have your voice out there for the whole world to see and think nothing of it. The whole world might not see it but the potential is there. People no longer have to be sitting in front of a TV or a radio or read about it in tomorrow’s newspapers. People can be directed to stories via Facebook and Twitter instantly. I don’t think anything is going to change anytime soon.
Of course, you should be able to trust your sources. If a few of your friends tweet about something, where did they find it from? Was the original source correct? How old is the information in relation to when you are reading it? Are the details correct? All of this has to be weighed up because everything we read in traditional and social media isn’t always correct.
This was a special recorded for Blast From The Past and Judy in particular from Balticon 43. I had already interviewed author and podcaster Tee Morris for The Balticon Special That Never Ends” (Erk Pod episodes 203 & 204) when I decided to surprise Judy with this special recording.
While I was away, Judy asked me to get a copy of the Podcasting for Dummies book that Tee co-wrote with Evo Terra. She didn’t know that I had a copy of the book on my shelf and that’s where I learnt a lot of the things I knew about podcasting from. So I told Tee a little about Blast and he and I recorded this short special. Enjoy!

MAJOR EDIT:
This episode of Erk Pod was recorded on the road in Vegas with Erk using a USB headset mic attached to his eee PC. I wasn’t happy with the audio so I wasn’t going to upload it. The episode of Erk Pod that I then recorded from the Super 8 near LAX was going to be Erk Pod 206 instead. But I ended up uploading the Vegas one by mistake so that one will be 206 and the one recorded in LA will be Erk Pod 207.

Welcome to episode 38 of Echo. This recording was originally of an episode of Hyper Nonsense (episode 133) that was recorded while Erk was at work as Mr Shed. Erk joins Hyper Nonsense host Shawno for an afternoon at work (Erk) and an evening of podcasting (Shawno). The first part of this large Hyper Nonsense episode is Echo 37.
The episode is unedited to show you how it was recorded on the day. This episode actually predates Echo. If you have heard Erk on Hyper Nonsense, you may have heard this episode but this is the first time it has been available on an Erk feed.
During the episode, Erk and Shawno talk about trains (of course) and a lot lot more over an episode that goes close to 2 hours. Erk is at work and work has to come first but due to the wonders of technology, you can actually hear what is going on. Shawno did the recording and Erk was using his mobile phone with Skype. Hands free was used when required.

This is a 3 part series recorded on 3 separate beaches. These episodes were originally recorded for Erk Pod in June 2008. Echo 33 was recorded at Byron Bay on the far NSW North Coast. It was originally recorded for Erk Pod as episode 119 during his 2008 Road Trip. It was certainly better weather than the weather conditions for Echo 31!

Due to the length of time that Erk Pod has been going for (over 2 years!), I could have imported and edited 2 years worth of show notes etc. However because of the amount of work that would have presented me (in addition to the other work that had to be done on this site), I decided to restrict posts on this site to 2009 and beyond. 2007 & 2008 posts can be found on the old Erk Pod website here.
